The Delone Catholic Music Department finds its purpose in the Mission Statement of Delone Catholic High School: Delone Catholic High School educates and challenges students spiritually, academically, physically, socially and aesthetically within the traditions and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. This challenge will inspire students to encounter Jesus Christ personally and to “Be Doers of the Word" (James 1:22).
Spiritual growth occurs as students use their talents in praise of God, through the study and performance of sacred music in liturgical and concert settings. Academic growth and intellectual development are encouraged as students listen to music analytically and critically, making informed judgments about the music and what it means to them. Ear training exercises help students understand what they hear. Music is also approached intellectually as students acquire an understanding of musical terms and symbols as well as the historical, cultural, stylistic, programmatic and personal contexts of major works. Through interpretation, improvisation and composition, students exercise creativity and independent thinking. Physical skills are developed through instrumental and vocal training including coordination, balance, agility, relaxation, posture, poise and breath control. Strong social relationships are built within music performance groups which foster teamwork, communication, sportsmanship, respect for self and others, and appreciation for the unique potential of each person. Personal growth is evidenced as members of instrumental and vocal performance groups develop maturity, responsibility, service, leadership, self-confidence, self-discipline and excellence through healthy competition. Aesthetic sensitivity is nurtured as the students come to understand the basic elements of music and the way these elements come together to create an expressive work of art. Students discuss the current importance of the art of music in their lives, and ways in which it will continue to play a vital role after they graduate.
Through vocal and instrumental performance, students integrate these spiritual, academic, physical, social, personal, and aesthetic aspects of life.
